Agency Visit Recap & Reflection: Marc Reede

This past week, we were fortunate to receive a visit from Marc Reede, who pairs motivational speakers with clients who need speakers at their companies or events. With our final presentation for the Marketing for Good campaign quickly approaching, Marc Reede came to our M-School classroom to speak to us about turning what we've learned in our campaigns in the past semester, into a usable resource that we can take into our future career endeavors.

Marc Reede began speaking on college campuses, identifying as a "cereal entrepreneur"looking for ways to use his law degree and hard worth ethic to bridge the gap between motivation, and those seeking it to motivate employees. He emphasized to us the importance of finding a mentor, or even multiple, with experience that can help us stay on track with the goals we want to achieve. After speaking on college campuses, he began to make a lot of networking connections with other speakers, eventually attaining a place where he could use his entrepreneurial spirit to start his own business.

Reese talked with us about mistakes and rejects, hitting us every day. But its about how we deal with these mistakes that help us push forward. For example, he talked about Phil Knight offering Magic Johnson a shoe deal when Nike was just taking off. He said that he did not have money to give him in a contract, but offered him stock in his company, which he was confident would soon become very large. Magic Johnson decided to take a contract with Converse, however, because they offered him more money. He obviously now sees this as a huge regret, but takes lessons from things like this and moves on to benefit himself in the future.

He lastly touched on the importance of building a network, and continually tapping into that network. Once you set yourself up for success and have good relationships that you keep going, a lot of doors open for you. He also emphasized taking up opportunities that present themselves, and making the best of them. For example, if your school has a career fair, go. Always talk to whoever you're sitting with on an airplane, and the cool jobs don't get posted online, you have to go find them yourself.

Marc Reede taught all of us that this past semester of work is just the beginning. As we start to breakdown what we've learned, we can take this experience and use it to propel ourselves in whatever aspects of business, or even life, that we want to venture towards.
